Hyundai Palisade returns to market after a tough safety ordeal

In spring 2026, the story around the Hyundai Palisade escalated from a routine model update into a serious test for the brand. The trigger was a tragedy in the US — the death of a two-year-old child linked to the operation of the third-row electric seats.

The investigation showed that the folding-seat system could respond incorrectly to the presence of a person or object. This led to urgent measures — a recall of tens of thousands of vehicles and a complete halt to sales.

Hyundai responded promptly:

  • around 68 500 vehicles were recalled in North America

  • an additional about 58 000 — in South Korea

  • sales of the Limited and Calligraphy trims were temporarily suspended

The company acknowledged the issue and began work on a solution while continuing to investigate the causes of the incident.

This was not an isolated case

Prior to the tragedy, incidents had already been recorded:

  • several injuries in the US

  • similar cases in South Korea

This confirmed that the problem was systemic rather than a single defect.

What was actually fixed

An update that changed the system logic

Hyundai developed a software solution that affected key functions:

  • improved detection of people and objects

  • the "one-touch" folding function was disabled

  • it now requires holding the button, not a single tap

  • folding is possible only with the rear door open

  • control via the multimedia system has been disabled

The update can be installed:

  • over the air (OTA)

  • or at a dealer

After installation, dealers were authorized to resume selling the vehicles.

Return to the market

Sales resumed

After the modifications were completed, Hyundai officially announced the resumption of sales for the 2026 Palisade.

This is an important step, given that the Palisade remains:

  • one of the brand's key SUVs

  • Hyundai's best-selling SUV in South Korea last year
