Hyundai unveils eighth-generation Avante on June 26, 2026: what we know about the new Elantra

On June 26, 2026, Hyundai first showed The All New Avante at the press day for the Busan Mobility Show at BEXCO in Busan. This is the eighth generation of the compact sedan, which replaces the 2020 model. In some export markets, the family is sold under the Elantra name, but Hyundai has not yet announced where, when, or under what name the new model will be available outside Korea.

The debut matters for more than just the new body. Hyundai has increased the dimensions, replaced the base gasoline engine with a 2.0-liter unit, and brought the Pleos Connect infotainment system with the Gleo AI voice agent to this class for the first time. Prices, trim levels, and official fuel economy figures have not been disclosed yet.

What Hyundai presented on June 26

The new Avante is not a facelift, but a full generation change. Hyundai calls it the model’s eighth generation and notes that six years have passed since the previous car launched. Details of the debut were published in Hyundai Motor Group’s official announcement on Busan Mobility Show 2026.

Visually, the sedan adopts sharper Art of Steel styling, H-shaped lighting elements at the front and rear, slim side mirrors, and flush door handles. But the main practical change is not the design itself, but the larger body and the new digital cabin architecture.

The extra length and wheelbase should create more room inside, especially for rear passengers. But Hyundai has not yet published legroom figures, trunk volume, or curb weight, so it is too early to judge how much usable cabin space has actually been gained.

Two powertrains: a 2.0 gasoline engine and a 1.6 hybrid

At launch, two versions are announced for the Avante. The gasoline model gets a 2.0-liter engine with 149 PS paired with an IVT. The hybrid uses a 1.6-liter Smartstream setup, and its combined output is 157 PS. For the hybrid, Hyundai says it has an updated transmission design, a more powerful P2 traction motor, and a larger battery capacity, but the exact battery specifications and torque have not been named yet.

Fuel economy, acceleration, and emissions figures have not been published yet. So it is not yet correct to compare the new Avante with the current Elantra Hybrid or with rivals on efficiency.

The hybrid also gets Smart Regenerative Braking 3.0. It uses information about traffic ahead and the navigation route to choose regeneration intensity, slow the car automatically, and, if needed, bring it to a stop. A separate Stay Mode lets you use the climate control and multimedia system while parked without starting the engine.

Pleos Connect and Gleo AI: what changes in the cabin

Depending on the version, the center of the dashboard will feature a 12.9-inch or 14.6-inch display. In front of the driver there is a separate slim screen with basic driving information. Hyundai has kept physical buttons next to the screen rather than moving every function into the multimedia menus.

The new Pleos Connect system runs on Android Automotive OS. It includes split-screen support, app installation through the Pleos App Market, and over-the-air updates. Gleo AI is a voice agent based on a large language model; Hyundai says it can handle route search, vehicle settings, and selected information queries. The company explained the platform approach and its core functions in the official Pleos Connect presentation.

The availability of online services, apps, and voice features will depend on the market, language, and local regulations. For the export Elantra, the exact set of digital features has not yet been confirmed.

New driver assistance systems

Hyundai announced ten airbags and an expanded set of driver-assistance features. Among the brand’s new functions are NSCC 2 navigation-based adaptive cruise control and emergency braking when pressing the P button on the electronic shift selector. NSCC 2 can reduce speed in advance in speed-restricted areas, before speed bumps and intersections, then return to the set speed afterward.

Also mentioned are a pedal misapplication prevention assist, automatic steering when reversing along a previously driven path, remote parking, and a surround-view camera system. Hyundai will publish the full list of systems and their availability by trim level later. More details about the car itself and its debut can be found in Hyundai Motor Group’s article on the world premiere of The All New Avante.

When sales will begin

Hyundai plans to reveal the trim levels, official efficiency figures, and prices in the third quarter of 2026, after which it will begin taking orders in Korea. The launch dates for other countries, the possible Elantra name, and export-market specifications have not yet been announced.

The new Avante has already been presented as a production model, but it is not yet a car with a published price list and full technical specifications. For now, the key points are clear: Hyundai has made the sedan larger, prepared gasoline and hybrid versions, added a more modern multimedia system, and moved
