New Mitsubishi Pajero: What Has Been Confirmed Ahead of the September 2 Premiere

On September 2, 2026, Mitsubishi will unveil the new Pajero. In an official announcement dated May 29, the company named the returning SUV as the Pajero for the first time and confirmed its global premiere for the autumn. The chassis architecture, use of the S-AWC system and some off-road equipment are now known, but Mitsubishi has not yet disclosed the engines, dimensions, trim levels, prices or sales markets.

The September 2 date is listed on the official teaser website for the new Pajero. This clarification appeared after the spring announcement, so confirmed information should not be mixed with early rumours about powertrains and export versions.

It Has a Ladder Frame, but That Does Not Make It a “Triton with a Different Body”

The Mitsubishi release dated May 29, 2026 states that the new Pajero is built on the Triton’s robust ladder frame. The manufacturer also specifically says that the cabin, front suspension and rear suspension have been reworked for the SUV. This is an important qualification: sharing a platform does not allow the Triton’s dimensions, on-road behaviour or powertrain range to be automatically attributed to the Pajero.

A ladder frame is typically chosen for vehicles that need high durability on rough roads, towing capability and the ability to handle serious loads. But the frame itself does not indicate the ground clearance, approach and departure angles, wading depth or maximum trailer weight. All of these figures are worth waiting for until the September 2 presentation.

How to Read the Future Technical Sheet

If engine output is revealed on the day of the premiere, that alone will not be enough to assess the SUV’s off-road capability. For a body-on-frame model, the transmission type, the presence or absence of low range, differential locks, body geometry, suspension travel and permitted load are just as important. Until Mitsubishi publishes these details, comparing the Pajero with specific competitors would be premature.

S-AWC Is More Than Just a Four-Wheel-Drive Name

On August 4, 2026, Mitsubishi announced that the new Pajero will receive Super All-Wheel Control. In its official chassis publication, the system is described as part of a package designed to improve handling, off-road performance and stability on different surfaces.

On Mitsubishi’s technology page, S-AWC is described as an integrated vehicle-dynamics control system. It combines torque distribution between the axles, torque control between the left and right wheels and braking force management. However, this is Mitsubishi’s general description of the technology, not a complete list of the new Pajero’s components. The manufacturer has not yet specified which modes, locks and hardware components will be fitted to the production version.

What Is Already Visible in the Cabin

The teasers point to the return of the Triple Multi Meter in digital form. It is expected to display altitude, compass direction, outside temperature, longitudinal and lateral roll angles, as well as torque distribution between the wheels. Mitsubishi has not yet explained where this unit will be positioned—in the instrument panel, on the central screen or as a separate display.

The History Behind the Pajero Name

The first Pajero appeared in 1982. According to Mitsubishi, more than 3.25 million vehicles were sold across four generations in more than 170 countries and regions. The Pajero won the Dakar 12 times, including seven consecutive victories. The previous generation left overseas markets in 2021, so the September 2 premiere will mark the model’s first return to the global market in five years.

In some countries, the Pajero is sold under the name Montero. That does not justify treating American or European versions as confirmed for the new model: Mitsubishi has not yet announced the complete list of markets or the start-of-sales schedule.

What Remains Unknown

  • the type and output of the engine or engines;

  • whether there will be a hybrid version and which countries will receive it;

  • overall dimensions, wheelbase, seating capacity and luggage compartment volume;

  • ground clearance, approach and departure angles, wading depth and towing capability;

  • trim levels, prices and sales launch dates.

What to Watch for on September 2

The premiere should be assessed through two groups of information. The first is technical: powertrains, transmission, vehicle geometry and the specific implementation of S-AWC. The second is practical: which markets the vehicle is intended for, how many seats it has, which versions will be offered and when orders will open. Until these points are disclosed, the new Pajero remains a body-on-frame SUV with a clear basic concept but without the key specifications buyers use to choose one.
