Frequently asked questions
The campaign covers certain Land Rover Range Rover vehicles from the 2022–2026 model years, produced from July 8, 2021, to June 4, 2026, at the Solihull plant. Range Rover Sport is not listed in this campaign. Check the specific VIN to confirm whether a vehicle is affected.
Dealers will add drainage holes to the lower tailgate trim, inspect the rearview camera and replace it if necessary. The repair is free under the US campaign.
Enter the 17-character VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup and the official Land Rover USA recall search. You can also give the VIN and campaign code D171 to a dealer and request confirmation of the campaign status.
Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 93 997 Range Rover vehicles in the US because water could damage the rearview camera. The report for campaign D171 was submitted to NHTSA on October 15, 2026. The recall covers certain 2022–2026 model-year vehicles, so owners should check the specific VIN even if the image on the screen still appears normal.
How Water Reaches the Camera
The problem is related to water drainage in the tailgate. Water can collect around the camera, get inside it and damage the component over time. The screen may show a distorted image, or the image may disappear completely. This increases the risk of failing to see a person or obstacle while reversing.

The official recall report states that the results of an investigation into returned cameras were presented to the JLR safety committee on October 6, 2026. Most of the components examined had failed because water had entered them. The decision to launch the recall was made on October 8.

A model year is not the same as the calendar year of production, so there is no contradiction in the table: a 2022 model-year vehicle could have been assembled in 2021. Range Rover Sport is not listed in this campaign. The recall should not be extended to the entire lineup simply because the vehicles share the same brand name.

The Camera Works. Why Visit a Service Center?
A working image today does not rule out involvement in the recall. Water can damage the camera over time. Checking the image during a vehicle inspection is useful, but the campaign status is determined by the VIN.
What Will Be Fixed and When Owners Will Be Notified
Dealers have been instructed to drill additional drainage holes in the lower part of the tailgate trim where the camera is installed. They will check whether the camera works and replace it if necessary. This repair is provided free of charge under the US campaign.
As of October 25, 2026, dealer notification was scheduled for October 29. The first preliminary owner letters are due to be mailed no later than December 11, 2026. The date of the letter does not mean that a repair appointment has already been arranged for a particular vehicle; confirm with the service center that it is ready to carry out the work.
How to Check the Vehicle by VIN
Find the 17-character VIN in the documents and compare it with the vehicle. Land Rover lists two locations: the plate beneath the windshield on the driver's side and the certification label in the driver's door opening.
For a vehicle from the US market, enter the number in the NHTSA recall lookup service. A search by year and model provides general information; the VIN is required to check a specific vehicle.
Also check the number through the official Land Rover USA recall lookup. When contacting a dealer, provide the VIN and campaign code D171 and ask them to confirm the campaign status.

Why “0 Open Recalls” Does Not Tell the Whole Story
NHTSA warns that the search does not show recalls that have already been completed, and VINs for newly announced campaigns may be added gradually. A zero-result search therefore does not replace the vehicle's repair history. If the vehicle matches the model and production period, confirm the details with a dealer and repeat the search later if necessary.
What to Ask Before Buying a Used Range Rover
Ask the seller to show documentation confirming that D171 was completed if they claim the recall has been closed. Check the repair order for both camera replacement and drainage work. Installing a new camera earlier does not by itself confirm that the cause of the water intrusion was fixed.
Three Questions to Ask the Seller
Was D171 checked specifically for this VIN?
Is there service documentation confirming that the campaign was completed?
What work was carried out: was the camera replaced, was the drainage modified, or were both repairs performed?
For a vehicle imported from the US, agree the repair terms with an authorized local service center. A US document does not automatically confirm free service in every country. If the image is already distorted or missing, report this when booking an appointment; do not rely on a faulty camera while maneuvering.
