On 26 October 2026, Mazda announced the availability of Google Gemini for the new CX-5 in supported European markets. The assistant arrives through an over-the-air update and replaces Google Assistant once activated. According to Mazda's official announcement, this concerns cars with Google built-in. The update has not been announced for every CX-5 regardless of generation and equipment.
Gemini lets users speak to the system without learning fixed commands: they can refine a request, continue discussing a route, select music and compose message replies. Availability depends on country, language and connectivity; the model name alone is not enough.
Which CX-5 models can receive the update?
Mazda introduced the third-generation CX-5 in Europe on 10 July 2025. It announced Google built-in and 12.9- or 15.6-inch central screens at the time. The October news concerns the development of that infotainment system.
What to check in a sales listing
Android Auto and Google built-in are different. Connecting phone apps to the screen does not establish that Google services are built into the car. If a seller promises Gemini, ask to see the system in the vehicle, its settings and whether the assistant is available in your chosen language.

What Gemini can do on the road
The main change is its handling of context. You can describe a place or task and then refine your requirements in a follow-up. For navigation, this means searching based on the driver's preferences rather than only an exact address.
Task | Capabilities | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Finding a stop | Find a café or restaurant on the way, take preferences into account and refine the request. | Google Maps features vary by language and region. |
Music | Choose music to suit a mood or find a track from a description. | Mazda names Spotify, YouTube Music and Amazon Music. Apple Music is available through Apple CarPlay. |
Messages | Listen to messages, get summaries and compose or edit a reply by voice. | Compatible apps are needed; Google specifies a connected phone and notification access for messaging features. |
Cabin settings | Control supported climate and seat-heating functions. | Available commands depend on the car's equipment and system implementation. |
Two actions in one request
Mazda's German announcement gives an example: the driver asks the system to set the temperature to 21 degrees and switch on their seat heater in one request. It illustrates why understanding everyday speech matters: several settings can be combined in one instruction. This is a paraphrase; the system must be addressed in a supported language.

Is Russian supported?
The European announcement of 26 October 2026 lists 12 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Slovenian, Swedish and Turkish.
Russian and Romanian are not on the initial list. The announcement does not say when they might be added. Buyers of an imported CX-5 should check the voice assistant's language separately from the menu language.
How to activate Gemini and return to Assistant
The update is delivered over the air, but switching requires the user's consent. Activation requires a personal Google account and a compatible language. Complete the initial setup while parked.

Make sure the car is connected to the internet.
Sign in to a personal Google account in the infotainment system.
Check the selected language and the offer to switch to Gemini.
Confirm the switch if you want to use the new assistant.
Google's activation instructions also describe how to return to Google Assistant through settings. The update is voluntary. Calls and texts may require a Bluetooth connection to a phone, and reading notifications may require the relevant permission.
Which connection costs money?
Under Mazda's European terms, data for Gemini or Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play is free for three years when registering for Mazda Connected Services through MyMazda. The period starts with the new car's first registration, not when Gemini is installed. Updating the assistant does not restart the three-year period.
Mazda also allows these services to be used through a compatible connected smartphone with mobile data, both during and after the free period. Data charges depend on the carrier. Check individual app subscriptions separately; the free data period does not replace their terms.
What remains available offline?
Losing connectivity does not mean navigation stops completely. Google Maps can use offline maps downloaded in advance, but live traffic information will be unavailable. Mazda confirms some offline capabilities for Gemini without listing them all in the announcement. Do not assume the full set of conversational functions will work without a connection.

What to consider when buying a US car
In its US announcement of 26 October 2026, Mazda listed Gemini for all 2027 model-year CX-5 vehicles, while early 2026 model-year cars received Google Assistant. These distinctions appear in official Mazda USA materials. European connectivity terms should not automatically be applied to a US car.
During an inspection, test specific tasks: setting a route, starting your music service and replying to a message by voice. This will show which functions work with your phone, account and language before you buy.
