Smart #2 Brings Back the Fortwo Format: What Has Changed in the New Electric Two-Seater

On August 4, 2026, Smart revealed the first design elements of the production #2 in an unusual way — through murals on city walls. Behind the campaign is a specific project: the brand is bringing an ultracompact two-seat car back to its lineup, this time with an electric powertrain.

At a glance

  • The Smart #2 will retain its two-seat layout and city-focused purpose.

  • The production car is undergoing global testing ahead of its premiere in Paris in October 2026.

  • The concept's figures — around 300 km WLTP, a 35.7 kWh battery and 10–80% charging in 20 minutes — are not yet final specifications for the production car.

What happened on August 4, 2026

In Smart's official announcement on August 4, the brand described the campaign as the “first look” at the #2. Artists in different cities were asked to present the car through local murals. This was not a full premiere: technical data and final photos of the production version have not yet been published.

At the same time, Smart confirmed that the car's world premiere will take place at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. Until then, the model is undergoing testing in camouflage. The company outlined the timing and testing program in its official update on preparations for Paris.

Which Fortwo traits are carried over to the Smart #2

On September 2, 2025, Smart announced the “project: two” program and outlined the model's core idea: an A-segment electric car with two seats. Unlike the current #1, #3 and #5, this is once again a car designed primarily for tight streets and short trips. In the project's first official announcement, the company also identified China, Europe and selected global markets as launch destinations.

The confirmed features include two doors, two seats and the Fortwo's characteristic wheel placement close to the corners of the body. This layout reduces overhangs and makes more efficient use of the car's length. Rear-wheel drive was also announced as part of the original #2 concept, but the final specification of the production car has not yet been published.

What is known about the ECA platform

On June 22, 2026, Smart revealed the project's technical direction in Rome. The #2 concept is specified with a 35.7 kWh battery, almost 300 km of WLTP range and DC charging from 10 to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. These figures were published in Smart's material about the ECA platform and apply to the concept, so they cannot automatically be carried over to the production car.

The concept also includes V2L, which allows external devices to draw power from the traction battery. For a city car, this could be more useful than headline power output: for example, the battery could serve as a temporary energy source while parked. However, the available operating modes and equipment for the production #2 have not yet been published.

An interesting detail

The most difficult part of the project is not creating a small body, but fitting modern electronics, a traction battery and safety systems into it. That is why Smart is testing not only maneuverability, but also noise, vibrations, suspension performance on damaged asphalt and impacts with curbs.

How preparations for production are progressing

In its July 20, 2026 update, Smart listed several areas of testing: sudden lane changes, wet surfaces, uneven roads and different tire compounds. Engineers are also tuning the steering, body rigidity and suspension-motion control.

Comfort is being assessed separately. The company is measuring aerodynamic and road noise in a wind tunnel, an acoustic chamber and on public roads. For a car with a short wheelbase, this is an important area: compact dimensions make parking easier, but they do not automatically guarantee a smooth ride.

When will the Smart #2 reach the market

The production version is scheduled to premiere in Paris in October 2026. In September 2025, Smart said the model would launch in China, Europe and selected global markets. The full list of countries, pricing and sales start date have not yet been disclosed.

The US publication Car and Driver reports that the new two-seat Smart will not be sold in the United States. This is a media report, not a published global market list from Smart, so the final regional availability should be checked after the premiere.

What remains unknown

  • the car's exact dimensions and weight;

  • the electric motor output and battery capacity of the production version;

  • the real-world range of different configurations;

  • pricing, equipment levels and warranty terms;

  • whether rear-wheel drive will be standard in all markets.

For now, the Smart #2 looks less like a ready-made alternative to a conventional hatchback and more like the return of a rare format: an ultra-compact car built for the city. The key question — whether Smart has combined Fortwo dimensions with the demands of a modern electric vehicle — will be answered only after the Paris premiere and the release of the final specifications.
