Ram is bringing the ProMaster City back to the US in 2027. This is no longer a small van like the previous-generation model, but a larger vehicle designed for courier services, tradespeople, small businesses, and passenger transport. The idea is straightforward: many businesses need more room than a pickup offers, but do not want the bulk of a full-size van.
On March 11, 2026, Ram unveiled the new ProMaster City and announced US pricing on August 27. Orders are expected to open in the second half of 2026, with production scheduled for the same year and the first US deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2027. This is a North American model; Ram has not disclosed plans to sell it in other markets.
What is already known
the Tradesman Cargo van starts at $39,995;
the SLT Cargo starts at $41,495;
the Passenger Wagon is offered with five or eight seats and starts at $42,695;
all versions use a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 166 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive.
Why the segment is needed again
The previous ProMaster City left the US market after the 2022 model year. Its departure removed a significant part of the compact commercial van market: buyers were left choosing between a pickup with a covered bed, a used van, or a full-size model such as the Ram ProMaster or Ford Transit. Those vehicles offer more cargo space, but they also need more room in parking lots and dense urban areas.
The new ProMaster City occupies the middle ground. It is designed for routes with frequent stops, easy access to the cargo area, and the ability to enter a standard garage or covered parking structure. The van is listed as being less than 80 inches tall—approximately 2.03 m.

Not small—just big enough
The new van has 167 cubic feet of cargo space, or approximately 4.7 m³. The cargo floor is 111 inches long, or about 2.82 m, while the space between the rear wheel arches is more than 48 inches, or approximately 1.22 m. Ram says that is enough for two standard American pallets placed end to end.

Parameter | Ram's stated figures | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
Cargo volume | More than 167 cu. ft. / approximately 4.7 m³ | Room for equipment, boxes, or several pallets |
Towing | Target: up to 2,000 lb / approximately 907 kg | A small trailer carrying tools or equipment |
Payload | Target: more than 2,000 lb / more than 907 kg | Cargo capacity without moving up to a full-size van |
Doors | Rear swing-out doors opening to 180°; a rear liftgate is available | A choice suited to frequent curbside unloading or handling bulky items |
Ram describes the towing and payload figures as targets. Before buying, they should be checked against the final specification of the selected version, the weight of the equipment, and trailer limitations. Cargo volume alone does not show how much weight can be carried safely: loads must be secured according to applicable rules, including FMCSA cargo securement requirements for commercial transportation in the US.
A practical workspace without unnecessary complexity
Standard equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch central display with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital rearview mirror. For a vehicle that often doubles as a mobile office, these features are more useful than decorative options: they make it easier for drivers to keep track of routes, contacts, and camera views during a busy schedule.

Ram's safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and a driver attention monitoring system. The Passenger Wagon also has side-curtain airbags. The full list of trims and available equipment is published on the official ProMaster City page; it is worth checking again before ordering because trim content may change before deliveries begin.
Who should consider it—and who should not
A good fit: a tradesperson carrying a set of tools, an urban delivery service, a small service company, or a shuttle operator carrying five or eight passengers.

It may be too small for: heavy-load carriers, construction crews with long equipment, or companies that regularly need a large trailer. For these tasks, it is worth comparing the ProMaster City with full-size vans rather than focusing only on the starting price.
What has not been disclosed yet
Ram has not published US fuel-economy figures or announced an electric or hybrid version of the 2027 ProMaster City. The final payload figures for each specific configuration have also not been released. As a result, it is too early to draw conclusions about running costs based solely on the vehicle's price.
Why now
The ProMaster City's return is not an attempt to replace pickups or large vans with one vehicle. Ram is offering a separate format: a weather-protected enclosed cargo area, city-friendly dimensions, and a choice between cargo and passenger versions. In Ram's official announcement dated March 11, 2026, the model is explicitly described as part of the brand's lineup for professional use. If the final specifications remain unchanged when sales begin, the ProMaster City will bring back to the US a vehicle class that has had very little representation among new models for several years.
