New Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport: What Changes in the Second Generation

Volkswagen updated the Atlas Cross Sport alongside the regular Atlas, but the two vehicles serve different purposes. The Cross Sport remains a five-seat crossover with a more sharply sloping roofline. It is aimed at buyers who do not need a third row but do want generous second-row space and a large cargo area. The new model gets a redesigned body, a revised interior, and a new turbocharged engine. This is not a sporty version of the Atlas, but a two-row alternative to it.

The Dates That Put the Update in Context

On March 31, 2026, Volkswagen revealed the new-generation seven-seat Atlas at the New York International Auto Show; the date is listed on the official model page. On August 10, 2026, automotive publications released details about the Cross Sport. That is the publication date, not the start of sales: in the United States, the Cross Sport is expected to arrive in early 2027.

The Main Difference from the Regular Atlas

The Atlas Cross Sport and Atlas share the same architecture and powertrain, but the Cross Sport has only two rows of seats. As a result, it is not intended to serve as a seven-seat family vehicle, but it retains a more cohesive silhouette. In the new generation, the front end looks more restrained, the body sides are cleaner, and the rear glass and overhang are more sharply angled.

What Changed

What It Means in Practice

Body and interior

The Cross Sport retains five seats and gets a more sharply sloping rear section, while the Atlas is designed around three rows.

Engine

The new 2.0-liter EA888 evo5 turbo engine produces 282 hp, which is 13 hp more than the previous engine offered in the American-market Cross Sport.

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic transmission has been announced; front-wheel drive and 4Motion all-wheel drive will be available in the United States.

Interfaces

The cabin will feature a digital instrument cluster, a 12.9- or 15-inch central display, and a separate rotary controller.

Sales

The announced information applies to the U.S. market. Volkswagen has not yet announced timing or specifications for other countries.

New Engine: More Power, but the Crossover's Character Stays the Same

In the American-market Cross Sport, the previous 2.0-liter turbo engine gives way to the new EA888 evo5. Peak output rises from 269 to 282 hp, while published specifications list 350 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

For buyers, the important point is not the power figure itself, but the fact that Volkswagen is not changing the vehicle's concept: there is no V6 in the lineup, and no hybrid version has been announced at launch. The Cross Sport remains a large gasoline-powered crossover, rather than an attempt to turn the Atlas into a coupe-like crossover with a different chassis setup.

Fuel Economy Cannot Yet Be Stated Precisely

As of August 11, 2026, no EPA rating has been published for the new-generation Cross Sport. Forecasts for fuel consumption and range between refueling stops should therefore not be presented as manufacturer specifications. Once certification is complete, data for each version will appear in the FuelEconomy.gov database. This will be especially important when comparing front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models.

More Screens in the Cabin, but Not Only Screens

The dashboard is now almost vertical. The base version is expected to have a 12.9-inch central display, while most trim levels will receive a 15-inch unit. A 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster is listed as standard. The transmission selector has been moved to the steering column, freeing space on the center console for two wireless charging pads and cupholders.

One practical feature is the rotary Driver Experience Dial. It controls the volume and, after switching modes, lets the driver select drive modes and ambient-lighting settings. It does not replace the touchscreen, but it reduces the number of actions that have to be performed through menus.

What Is Confirmed and What Remains Unknown

Volkswagen already lists the Atlas Cross Sport as part of its American lineup and maintains a separate model media page. The new body, five-seat layout, 282-hp engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and drive options for the U.S. have been confirmed.

Final pricing for the 2027 Cross Sport, official EPA figures, the complete equipment list for each trim, and sales plans outside North America have not been disclosed. These gaps should remain gaps rather than being filled with data from the regular Atlas or the previous Cross Sport.

Who Should Wait for the Cross Sport

The new version makes sense for drivers who want a large two-row vehicle rather than a third row “just in case.” Compared with the regular Atlas, buyers should consider more than styling: the actual cargo capacity, the price of similarly equipped versions, and fuel economy once EPA data is published. Those three factors will show whether choosing the Cross Sport over the full-size seven-seat Atlas is worthwhile.
