Jaguar Type 01: what is already known about the brand’s first electric car of the new era

Jaguar Type 01 will be the brand’s first production car after its relaunch. It is an electric four-door GT, not another version of an existing model. Jaguar has already revealed the name, body style, and basic technical details, but there is still plenty we do not know ahead of the full debut.

The key point: Type 01 is not a show car, but a future production model in Jaguar’s new line-up. According to Autocar, its world premiere is scheduled for October 2026 in New York. The manufacturer itself limited its May materials to the wording “later in 2026.”

Type 01 and Type 00: what is the difference

In December 2024, Jaguar showed the Type 00, a design concept meant to signal the exterior style of the brand’s future cars. The company explicitly calls it a non-production vehicle. Type 01 is the next step: a production four-door GT built on Jaguar’s new electric architecture.

The full design of the Type 01 has not been revealed yet. The prototypes show a long hood, a low roofline, and a decorative strikethrough element where the hood meets the windshield. This detail first appeared on the Type 00 and, judging by the test cars, will carry over to the production model. For the context behind the concept and the technical direction announced at the time, see Jaguar’s official Type 00 release.

What the Type 01 name means

Jaguar is using the word Type for a reason. It refers back to historic names such as C-Type, E-Type, and F-Type. In the new designation, each part has its own meaning:

  • Type - a link to Jaguar’s historic naming system;

  • 0 - an electric powertrain and no exhaust emissions;

  • 1 - the first model in the brand’s new generation.

That is Jaguar’s own explanation. The “0” refers specifically to the absence of exhaust emissions while driving, not to the car’s full environmental footprint from production and the electricity used for charging.

Confirmed specifications

Jaguar has confirmed a three-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Combined output will be more than 1,000 PS, and torque will exceed 1,300 Nm. According to the manufacturer, that makes the Type 01 the most powerful road-going Jaguar in the brand’s history.

Report from an industry publication citing JLR Investor Day

In developing the Type 01, Jaguar is drawing on the experience of its Formula E factory team. The manufacturer says the car’s tuning benefited from work in all-wheel-drive control, silicon-carbide inverters, regenerative braking, and fast charging. That does not mean the road-going GT received racing components unchanged: this is about transferring engineering solutions and software algorithms. Jaguar explained more about prototype testing in Monaco in the company’s official statement.

Range and charging: why it is too early for numbers

During the Type 00 presentation, Jaguar said the first production car of its new era was aiming for up to 770 km on the WLTP cycle and up to 321 km of range in 15 minutes on a fast charger. But those were preliminary targets published in 2024. After the Type 01 name appeared, the company did not confirm them as final certified figures.

So the range, battery capacity, peak charging power, and charging time cannot yet be treated as disclosed Type 01 specifications. They may be announced at the premiere or closer to the market launch.

What Jaguar has not said yet

  • battery capacity and usable capacity;

  • official WLTP and EPA range;

  • 0-100 km/h time, top speed, and curb weight;

  • body dimensions, luggage capacity, and cabin layout;

  • trim levels, pricing, and launch markets;

  • exact delivery timing.

What Type 01 changes for Jaguar

Type 01 is meant to set the direction for future Jaguars: the company calls it the first model in its new electric line-up and ties future design, technology, and driving character to it. But it is still too early to judge the car as an alternative to other fast electric GTs. A meaningful comparison will require final figures for the battery, range, charging, price, and equipment.

For now, Type 01 can be described like this: it is a large electric GT with three-motor all-wheel drive and more than 1,000 PS, and it will be the first production car from the relaunched Jaguar. The manufacturer is still holding back the rest of the key specifications until the official debut.
