MG Go previews the future MG 2: what we know about the compact EV

On 9 July 2026, MG unveiled the Go concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The event itself ran from 9 to 12 July 2026, as confirmed by the official Goodwood website. The show car was the first public preview of a new fully electric B-segment hatchback, with a production version planned by MG for 2027.

In specialist media, the future model is called the MG 2. However, in MG's official release from 09.07.2026, that name has not yet been confirmed: the manufacturer speaks of a new compact electric car. So MG 2 should be regarded as a working or expected name until the brand confirms it separately.

The concept is close to the production car

MG Go looks like a track-ready hot hatch: it has flared wheel arches, large wheels, a pronounced front splitter, a small spoiler, and a chunky rear diffuser. These details make the show car stand out, but not all of them will carry over to the road-going version.

MG global design chief Jozef Kaban told Autocar that the concept is a production car specially dressed for Goodwood. According to him, the basic proportions and overall body shape are close to the future model. That means that once the show-spec trim is removed, MG Go should turn into a regular five-door city hatchback.

On the official MG Go page, the concept is described outright as a preview of the future fully electric compact hatchback. The car was developed by MG's design centre in London. When shaping the look, the team drew on the brand's history, including the MGB GT, but did not create a literal retro model.

In brief: MG Go and the future MG 2

Is MG Go a production car?

No. MG Go is a concept that shows the design and format of the brand's future compact electric car. The road-going version will get a calmer body kit and should be revealed separately.

Has the MG 2 name already been confirmed?

Not yet. Auto publications are using the MG 2 name, but the manufacturer refers only to a new electric B-segment hatchback in its official materials.

When will the production model arrive?

MG plans to bring the compact EV to market in 2027. The exact premiere and sales start dates have not been announced yet.

Is the range known?

No. As of 13 July 2026, the company has not disclosed battery capacity, motor output, range, or charging speed.

Will MG 2 be an affordable EV?

There is no official price yet. The compact format could make the model cheaper than the MG 4, but it is too early to call it budget-friendly before the pricing is published.

Why MG 2 cannot yet be called budget

Compact dimensions and its position below the MG 4 in the range may point to a relatively low starting price. But MG has not announced the price, battery capacity, range, or power. Without those figures, it is impossible to say that the production car will become one of Europe's cheapest electric cars.

What is more, MG representatives describe the future model as an emotional, fashionable city car rather than as the most stripped-down budget offering. The brand wants to win buyers over with design and character, so the price may depend not only on size but also on equipment, battery, and positioning.

Who the new hatchback will compete with

By size and format, the future MG 2 should fall into the same class as the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric and the electric Mini Cooper. A direct comparison is premature: the rivals already have known batteries, power, and range, while MG has shown only the design direction.

For MG, moving into this segment makes sense. The brand's European line-up includes larger EVs and crossovers, but no separate compact electric hatchback aimed at city use. The production version of Go should fill that gap.

What will become clear closer to launch

Before the production model is unveiled, the manufacturer will need to reveal the platform, battery capacity, motor power, charging speed, range, and list of markets. It is also unknown whether the MG 2 name will remain and how much calmer the road-going car's design will be.

As of 13.07.2026, only the electric powertrain, B-segment, design development in London, and a 2027 launch plan are confirmed. The rest of the specifications, including the price, are still open.

Which features will determine MG 2's market position

The concept's appearance already shows the car's overall format, but for judging the production MG 2, the technical and pricing details will matter more. After the official premiere, it is worth paying attention to the following:

  • Battery capacity and range. These will decide whether the model stays mainly a city car or can handle regular intercity trips.

  • Charging power. Even a small battery can be practical if the car supports sufficiently fast DC charging.

  • Starting price. This is what will show whether MG 2 can compete with the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, the electric Mini Cooper, and other compact EVs.

  • Boot space and rear-seat room. At a length of around four metres, the cabin layout will be one of the main criteria for buyers who need a car for city use and everyday trips.

  • Standard equipment. The price of the entry version will matter only together with the list of safety systems, infotainment, climate equipment, and charging features.

  • Market list. MG has not yet said which countries will get the production model first or whether launch timings will differ by region.
