Deepal S05 with LiDAR: How the Chinese Update Differs from the Global Version

On August 6, 2026, Deepal introduced the updated electric S05 to the Chinese market. The main change is a driver-assistance suite with LiDAR, two Horizon Robotics J6M computing chips and a claimed performance of 256 TOPS. The model also received revised exterior details, a new cabin display and batteries offering 520 or 620 km on the CLTC cycle.

The export-market S05, already sold in Europe and the UK, looks similar but is technically a different specification: it has one 68.8 kWh battery, rear- or all-wheel drive, WLTP range figures and a different electronics package. As of August 10, 2026, there is no official confirmation that the updated LiDAR version will be supplied to Europe.

What Is Meant by the Global Version Here

Deepal does not offer one identical specification in every country. This comparison uses the official European and UK S05 specification available on March 1, 2026. Equipment for other markets may differ, so buyers of imported cars should check the destination country and the exact trim level.

Not listed in the official specification

The full list of European specifications is available on Changan's official specifications page. It states separately that the data is current as of March 1, 2026 and may vary depending on the market and trim level.

Why 620 km Cannot Be Compared Directly with the European Range

CLTC and WLTP are different laboratory procedures. The Chinese figures of 520 and 620 km cannot be subtracted from the European figures and treated as a loss of efficiency. The cycles use different speed profiles, test durations, temperature conditions and calculation methods.

What to Compare Instead of Two Range Figures

  • usable battery capacity;

  • energy consumption in the same test cycle;

  • drivetrain type, wheel size and trim weight;

  • real-world tests at the same speed and temperature;

  • charging speed over the relevant range, such as from 10 to 80%.

For the European version, the manufacturer quotes 303 miles for rear-wheel drive and 278 miles for all-wheel drive under WLTP. The actual result depends on weather, speed, load and climate-control use.

What LiDAR Adds—and What It Does Not Promise

The Chinese S05's system includes one LiDAR sensor, three millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and 11 cameras. Two Horizon Robotics J6M chips deliver a combined performance of 256 TOPS. More than 90 driver-assistance functions are claimed, including driving and parking assistants.

LiDAR alone does not make the S05 autonomous. The sensor measures the distance to objects and supplements the cameras and radars, but the vehicle's behavior is determined by the software, recognition quality and the limitations of each specific function. The driver must watch the road and be ready to intervene.

For the European S05, the manufacturer lists 17 driver-assistance systems and specifies cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors, but no LiDAR. This does not mean that the European version lacks active safety features: it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning. The main difference lies in the hardware platform and the range of available scenarios.

The Body Is Longer, but the Wheelbase Is Unchanged

The updated Chinese car is 22 mm longer than the European version, while the width, height and wheelbase are identical. This points to changes to the exterior elements rather than an increase in the distance between the axles. The longer body alone does not prove that there is more legroom.

The European version's practical figures are already known: the luggage compartment holds 492 l, while the front trunk provides 159 l in the rear-wheel-drive model and 152 l in the all-wheel-drive version. The updated Chinese S05 is also reported to have a 492 l rear luggage compartment and a 159 l front trunk.

Cabin and Infotainment

The Chinese update receives a 15.6-inch display with 2.5K resolution that can rotate toward the driver or passenger by up to 15°. There is no instrument cluster directly in front of the driver: key information is shown on a 50-inch augmented-reality head-up display. The infotainment system is powered by an automotive chip made using a 3 nm process and runs Deepal OS 4.2.

The European S05 has a slightly smaller 15.4-inch central display. The augmented-reality head-up display is retained, while the standard audio system has 14 speakers. China offers an optional 18-speaker system rated at 1280 W. The availability of specific online services, voice functions and interface languages depends on the region.

If You Are Considering an S05 from China

  1. Check whether the charging connector and charging protocols are compatible with the local infrastructure.

  2. Confirm whether navigation, the mobile app and software updates work outside China.

  3. Ask for a list of the available driver-assistance functions: having LiDAR does not guarantee that all Chinese functions will work in another country.

  4. Check the warranty terms for the vehicle and traction battery.

  5. Do not apply the European safety rating to an unverified imported specification without checking its equipment.

What Is Known About the Global Version's Safety

Euro NCAP awarded the Deepal S05 five stars: 94% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection, 78% for vulnerable road-user protection and 76% for safety assistance systems. The result was published on December 10, 2025 and applies to the European electric versions specified in the test protocol.

The Chinese facelift with its new sensor package has not undergone a separate European assessment. The additional LiDAR cannot be used as a basis for automatically assigning it the same or a higher crash-test result: passive safety and the performance of electronic systems are assessed separately.

Conclusion: The Update Does Not Replace the Global Version

The August 2026 Chinese Deepal S05 gained a more powerful computing platform, LiDAR, two battery options and an updated interior. The European car offers its own advantages: a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, WLTP figures, localized systems and a confirmed Euro NCAP rating.

Buyers should verify the specification for the specific country, the trim level and the VIN. Until Changan announces exports of the LiDAR version, the Chinese update should not be treated as a future European specification.
