Tesla Semi Prepares for European Debut: What We Know Before Hannover

Frequently asked questions

The European model page lists an estimated range of approximately 550 km, a gross combination weight of 40,000 kg, a tractor curb weight of 9,100 kg, three independent rear-axle motors, up to 800 kW of drive power, 1.0 kWh/km energy consumption, MCS 3.2 charging, and up to 25 kW of ePTO power. Tesla says the figures depend on vehicle configuration.

Tesla announced that European specifications and launch details will be revealed at IAA Transportation in Hannover. Accredited press can attend on September 14, 2026, other visitors from September 15, and the show closes on September 20. Tesla’s individual presentation time had not been published as of August 23.

The price, battery capacity, first-stage sales countries, exact European delivery start date, and whether a long-range version will be offered in Europe have not been announced. Tesla has also not disclosed the European version’s peak charging power or the conditions behind its charging claim.

On August 20, 2026, the official Tesla Semi account announced that the truck’s European specifications and launch details would be revealed at IAA Transportation in Hannover. The show will open to accredited press on September 14, to other visitors on September 15, and will close on September 20. This is not the start of sales yet, but an announcement of a presentation at which Tesla is expected to turn years of European plans into concrete launch conditions.

In brief: what was confirmed as of August 23, 2026

  • Tesla will show the Semi and announce its European specifications at IAA Transportation 2026.

  • The European model page already lists an estimated range of 550 km, a gross combination weight of 40,000 kg, and a tractor curb weight of 9,100 kg.

  • The powertrain consists of three independent electric motors on the rear axles, with claimed drive power of up to 800 kW.

  • The price, battery capacity, first-stage sales countries, and exact European delivery start date have not yet been announced.

Why the August 20 announcement is not yet a sales launch

Tesla’s wording is specific in one respect: in Hannover, the company promises to present the Semi’s specifications and European launch details. However, it does not name an order-opening date, initial markets, or a schedule for handing vehicles over to customers. It is therefore premature to say that European sales have already been confirmed for a particular month.

In Tesla’s official report dated January 28, 2026, the Semi factory program in Nevada was still listed as being at the equipment-preparation stage, with series production planned for 2026. In the April 22 report, its status had changed to pilot production, while the company still expected to transition to volume production during 2026. These details concern US production and do not, by themselves, determine the timing of deliveries to Europe.

The main outcome of the IAA presentation should not be another truck reveal, but the publication of verifiable terms for the European launch. For fleet operators, power and range are only part of the equation. Price, payload, service, charging arrangements, and the date from which the truck can be included in a purchasing plan matter just as much.

Which European Tesla Semi specifications have already been published

The European Tesla Semi page currently shows one Standard Range configuration. All figures below come from the manufacturer, not from an independent test. Tesla also warns that specifications depend on the vehicle configuration.

Parameter

Officially listed on the European page

What still needs clarification

Gross combination weight

40,000 kg

Permitted axle loads and chassis options

Range

Approximately 550 km

Calculation conditions, cargo weight, speed, and temperature

Curb weight

9,100 kg

How optional equipment will affect payload

Drive system

3 independent motors on the rear axles

Gear ratios and the range of European configurations

Drive power

Up to 800 kW

Continuous power and certification data

Energy consumption

1.0 kWh/km

The route and payload under which the figure was obtained

Fast charging

Up to 60% of range in 30 minutes

Starting charge level, temperature conditions, and peak power

Connector

MCS 3.2

Compatibility with public stations and the available site network

ePTO electric power take-off

Up to 25 kW

Feature availability and limitations for different body types

European data cannot automatically be supplemented with figures from the North American page. In the US, Tesla lists Standard Range and Long Range versions, while the European website currently shows only the Standard Range version with approximately 550 km of range. The company has not said whether a long-range version will be offered in Europe.

Why energy consumption cannot provide an exact battery capacity

Multiplying 1.0 kWh/km by 550 km gives 550 kWh. But that is only an arithmetic estimate, not a confirmed battery capacity. Both underlying figures are rounded, Tesla does not disclose the battery’s usable or gross capacity, and range depends on payload, speed, weather, terrain, and climate-control use. It would therefore be misleading to present 550 kWh as a technical specification of the Semi.

What charging via MCS 3.2 means

MCS is a high-power charging system developed for heavy electric transport. Unlike the fast-charging systems used by ordinary passenger vehicles, it is designed for significantly higher currents and larger batteries. Its technical foundation and standardization process are described by the industry organization CharIN.

For a fleet operator, the connector name alone does not solve the practical problem. Operators need the locations of compatible stations, the available power at each site, tariffs, waiting times, and the ability to charge the truck and semitrailer without uncoupling. Tesla currently promises up to 60% of range in 30 minutes, but it has not disclosed the European version’s peak charging power or the conditions under which this result is achieved.

What Tesla should reveal in Hannover

Five questions that will show whether the Semi is ready to be assessed as a working tool

  1. When will orders and deliveries begin? Specific dates and a list of the first-stage countries are needed.

  2. How much will the tractor cost, and what will be included in the standard equipment?

  3. At what payload and under which test method are the 550 km range and 1.0 kWh/km consumption figures claimed?

  4. What payload will remain after accounting for the 9,100 kg curb weight and the selected semitrailer?

  5. How will the charging network, service, and spare-parts supply for European customers be organized?

There are also more specific technical questions: cab dimensions, turning radius, permitted axle loads, winter efficiency, charging speed after several consecutive trips, and the active safety systems included for European certification. Tesla has not published these details yet.

Exact dates for the European debut

  • August 20, 2026 — the official Tesla Semi account announced that European specifications and launch details would be revealed in Hannover.

  • September 14, 2026 — IAA Transportation press day; the venue will be open to accredited journalists from 08:00 to 18:00.

  • September 15, 2026 — the first exhibition day for visitors.

  • September 20, 2026 — the final day of IAA Transportation 2026.

The official IAA Transportation schedule confirms the exhibition dates, but Tesla’s individual presentation time had not been published as of August 23. The first details may appear on press day, but that remains an expectation rather than a schedule announced by the company.

What can be said before the presentation

Tesla has already outlined the basic format of the European Semi: a 40-tonne combination, an estimated range of 550 km, three motors, up to 800 kW of power, and MCS charging. That is enough to understand the truck’s general class, but not enough to calculate trip costs or the payback period.

Before Hannover, it is reasonable to treat only the published specifications and the upcoming disclosure of further details as confirmed. The price, battery, long-range version, sales countries, and first-delivery date remain unknown. The answers to these questions will show whether the September presentation marks the start of Tesla Semi’s real European program or is another interim step.
